Did you realize that anxiety, or nervousness, is the #1 most common symptom of addictive behavior? Anxiety is an emotion that causes us to be distracted and unfocused. It is present when one is uncertain about something going on in one’s life. The more uncertain we are, the more anxiety we have.
Putting on my minister’s hat, the first reason you want to avoid anxiety is that the Scripture says we are to be “anxious of nothing.” Living a life full of anxiety does not fit who we really are. Here are some additional negative effects in your life: it pre-occupies your mind, it div
erts your attention, it slows down your productivity, it affects your relationships with other people, it makes for unwise decisions, it steals your joy and peace, and it wastes your time and energy.
God does not want us living with anxiety. Read Philippians 4:4-7. Be anxious of nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Bet your life that what the Scripture says is true.
Anxiety is a faith battle so turn your anxiety over to God to take care of it for you. Stop trying to do it by yourself and just trust Him to relieve the problem. Remember there is nothing certain in your life, and uncertainty causes anxiety. The only exception are the promises made in the Scriptures are certain.
Read in my book, “Freedom From Addiction 3,” all the other symptoms of addiction. The more of the symptoms you have, the more likely it is you are suffering from the disease of addiction.
